Cuando mi padre tenía 20 años, llegó a la embajada de Estados Unidos en Chile para alistare en la tropas norteamericanas que estabán viajando a Vietnam. Según cuentan, quería hacerlo para sentir que había algo por lo cual dar la vida. Hoy, a mis 25, siento esa extraña sensación de entenderme como un soldado, de preparar mi artillería y enfrentarme con un campo de batalla plagado de lágrimas y sangre. La metáfora bélica como forma de enfrentar la vida nos entrega las posibilidades de ver nuestras luchas como cuestiones de vida o muerte. Eso, creo yo, nos permite ver las cosas con la distancia que da la trinchera. Valorar la gente que está al lado, comenzar a querer o cambiar esa obstinada tendencia a evitar el cariño corporal. Las siguientes canciones y pasajes ilustran dos características en extremo positivas de la guerra: la idea de la salvación y la idea de la concentración y tranquilidad estratégicas. Muchachos y muchachas, prepárense. Hoy, dejo de ser pacifista.

Comentarios a Sun Bin - Thomas Cleary
"Esta es la lógica de la antigua obra china: conoce a tu enemigo, conócete a ti mismo, conoce dónde estás, conoce lo que está sucediendo. La idea de eliminar los mecanismos de opresión y la guerra puede ser emocionalmente estimulante, pero es también infantil y exactamente contraria al sentido común estratégico, porque cae en la más simple de las trampas. Desmantelar esos mecanismos, no simplemente soñar con eliminarlos, es un enfoque más sólido y más inteligente, con tal de que no sea simplemente un sueño calmante, y realmente se refuerce el conocimiento de sus propósitos y operaciones. Estas razones para estudiar el arte de la guerra ya han sido expuestas con una sencilla claridad por los filósofos clásicos de China, a los que Sun Bin cita aquí de manera informal.
